Guest Blog Post: "Success & Happiness, It's Not What You Think"
"Success & Happiness, It's Not What You Think" A Guest Blog by WeArePR Clothing Owner, Alex Mershon
After owning a clothing line & interacting with people over the past four years in this space, it has become clear to me that we, as a whole, need to redefine success.
Happiness in life is a success. I see so many business owners as well as every day people get this backward & believe that money is the thing that brings success.
Let me be an example for you, we are going to make less money with WeArePR Clothing this year & I made that sacrifice because I am truly happier & in a better place mentally.
Now I want to make sure you don't read that & quit your job to be happy because there is still a level of practicality that we must maintain. However, I do want to challenge your outlook on what success means to you.
We all have responsibilities that we cannot ignore; some of us have more than others. Marriage, children, a mortgage, debt, aging parents, the list could go on forever & is unique to every single person.
The one common thread that we can use no matter the situation is how we judge ourselves & how successful we are.
I truly believe the unlock to a better life is pursuing happiness. Last year with the line we own, I worked 18-20 hour days, ignored my wife, went into a weird mental place, but on the outside people saw that the brand was growing 10x. I had enough self-awareness to listen to my wife & realize that what I was doing was not success especially since I was a mess/ getting worse every day.
We made a very hard decision to step away from the brand & slow things down to sacrifice some of the money for a better life.
It was one of the hardest decisions I've had to make but looking back, it was the right move. Flash forward to today writing this article, I am the happiest I have been in the 26 years I have been on this earth even though I have more on my plate now than I did last year.
I wouldn't trade this life for anything & I urge you to take 10 minutes after reading this & think…
What does success look like to you in your circumstances?
